Diffuse Emission from the Galactic Plane and Unidentified EGRET Sources
نویسنده
چکیده
Diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission is produced in interactions of cosmic rays with gas and ambient photon fields and thus provides us with an indirect measurement of cosmic rays in various locations in the Galaxy. The diffuse gamma-ray continuum is more intense than expected both at energies below 200 keV and above 1 GeV. The existing models for the high-energy excess are reviewed in the light of recent TeV gamma-ray measurements of both diffuse emission and of discrete Galactic sources such as supernova remnants. I specifically discuss whether particular classes of Galactic objects are observable as EGRET gammaray sources, either by being found among the unidentified EGRET sources or by contributing to the diffuse emission as unresolved sources.

The primary objective of the study of unidentified EGRET sources with INTEGRAL is to locate with a few arcminute accuracy the hard X-ray / soft γ-ray counterparts within the EGRET error circle or to determine upper limits on their emission in the INTEGRAL energy range. The INTEGRAL Galactic Plane Scan (GPS) and Galactic Centre Deep Exposure (GCDE) data have been analysed and cross–correlated wi...
متن کاملSe p 20 06 Contribution of unresolved point sources to the galactic diffuse emission
The detection by the HESS atmospheric Cherenkov telescope of fifteen new sources from the Galactic plane makes it possible to estimate the contribution of unresolved point sources like those detected by HESS to the diffuse Galactic emission measured by EGRET and recently at higher energies by the Milagro Collaboration. Assuming that HESS sources have all the same intrinsic lumi-nosity, the cont...
متن کاملOff-beam Gamma-ray Pulsars and Unidentified Egret Sources in the Gould Belt
We investigate whether gamma-ray pulsars viewed at a large angle to the neutron star magnetic pole could contribute to the new population of galactic unidentified EGRET sources associated with the Gould Belt. The faint, soft nature of these sources is distinctly different from both the properties of unidentified EGRET sources along the galactic plane and of the known gamma-ray pulsars. We explo...
متن کاملSurveying the Tev Sky with Milagro
A wide field of view, high duty factor TeV gamma-ray observatory is essential for studying TeV astrophysical sources, because most of these sources are either highly variable or are extended. Milagro is such a TeV detector and has performed the deepest survey of the Northern Hemisphere sky at TeV energies. In addition to detecting the Crab Nebula and Mrk 421, which are known TeV sources, Milagr...
متن کاملPulsars and Their Nebulae as EGRET Sources
At the end of the EGRET mission, only 6-8 Galactic sources had been identified as young pulsars. Since then, several energetic pulsars have been discovered in EGRET error boxes along the Galactic plane, as well as several pulsar wind nebulae from which pulsations have not yet been discovered. Some of these nebulae are associated with moderately variable EGRET sources, suggesting that the γ-ray ...
